ABOUT THE ARTIST

Although Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643) already enjoyed considerable renown as a composer and music theorist, nothing he had composed up to that time could have anticipated the grandeur of the Vespro della Beata Vergine (Vespers of the Blessed Virgin), printed in Venice in 1610. Given that the work was composed during his service in Mantua, where he was not required to write sacred music, and that there is no evidence that it was performed in Mantua or any other city during the composer’s lifetime, numerous hypotheses have emerged throughout history about the circumstances and reasons for the composition of the work, as well as its specific purpose. The opulence and variety of procedures and styles, the departure from tradition, and the scope of the work still baffle experts today, elevating the Vespro della Beata Vergine far above the standard sacred repertoire of the 17th century. Following Monteverdi's principle of inserting motets, the performance by the Croatian Radio and Television Choir , the Concerto dei Venti ensemble, conducted by Tomislav Fačini , brings music by Croatian authors of the same period, Ivan Lukačić and Vinko Jelić, at appropriate points, with a contextualization of contemporary Croatian creativity by Berislav Šipuš .
