ABOUT THE PERFORMER

Filip Merčep is a renowned Croatian percussionist known for his versatility and innovation. He first drew public attention as a finalist in the 2010 Eurovision Young Musicians competition, and soon after won awards such as the Ivo Vuljević Award, the Zagreb Philharmonic Award, and the Porin Award for best classical music interpretation. He has performed in the concert cycles of the HRT Symphony Orchestra, the Zagreb Philharmonic, the Zagreb Soloists, and many other ensembles, as well as at festivals such as the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, the Osor Musical Evenings, and the Samobor Music Autumns, among others. He graduated in percussion from the Music Academy in Zagreb, and his studies in Live Electronics at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam further directed him toward exploring the intersection of music and technology. His great passions are programming video games controlled by musical instruments and developing algorithms for computer-based performance detection to control electronics, visuals, and lighting in real time. He owns the DigitalTwin business, through which he develops projects at the intersection of art, artificial intelligence, and video games. His most notable project is VUM (Video Gaming with Art), an interactive exhibition combining musical instruments and video games, which has so far attracted over 4,000 visitors. He is a member of the Sudar Percussion ensemble, known for large multimedia projects including OXYGENE—reinterpreted music by Jean-Michel Jarre—and Sudar Traditions. In their latest programme, Folk Dances and Piazzolla, the ensemble brings together traditional dances of Southeast Europe and Piazzolla's The Four Seasons in Merčep's arrangement. He is also a member of the esteemed Katarzyna Mycka Marimba Quartet, with whom he performs across Europe, playing arrangements of masterworks in classical music as well as original compositions written for the ensemble. As an educator, he continuously develops educational programmes related to percussion and contemporary music, ranging from the basics of electronic production to masterclasses. He has lectured at universities in Miami, Toronto, Hanover, Valencia, Jaén, Santiago de Chile, Gdańsk, Lyon, and Nagoya, among others, and he also organizes his own summer marimba seminar in Tribunj. Through his work, he continuously promotes Croatian music, explores new forms of artistic expression, and inspires young generations of musicians.
