ABOUT THE ARTIST

Filip Merčep is a renowned Croatian percussionist known for his versatility and innovation. He attracted public attention as a finalist in the Eurovision Young Musicians Contest in 2010, and soon won awards such as the Ivo Vuljević Award, the Zagreb Philharmonic Award and the Porin Award for the best interpretation of classical music. He has performed in the cycles of the HRT Symphony Orchestra, the Zagreb Philharmonic, the Zagreb Soloists and many other ensembles, as well as at festivals such as the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, the Osor Music Evenings, the Samobor Music Autumn, etc. He graduated in percussion from the Zagreb Academy of Music, and his Live Electronics studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory further directed him towards researching the combination of music and technology. His great passion is programming video games controlled by musical instruments and developing algorithms for computer-based detection of playing for the purpose of controlling electronics, visuals and light in real time. He is the owner of the DigitalTwin business, within which he develops projects at the intersection of art, artificial intelligence and video games. The most notable project is VUM – Videogaming with Art, an interactive exhibition that combines musical instruments and video games and has so far attracted more than 4,000 visitors. He is a member of the Sudar Percussion ensemble, known for large-scale multimedia projects including OXYGENE, reinterpretations of the music of Jean-Michel Jarre, and Sudar Tradiciæ. In the latest program, Folk Carousels and Piazzolla, the ensemble brings together traditional carousels of Southeast Europe and Piazzolla's Four Seasons in Mercep's arrangement. He is also a member of the renowned Katarzyna Mycka Marimba Quartet, with which he performs throughout Europe, performing arrangements of major works of classical music, as well as original compositions written for this ensemble. As a pedagogue, he continuously develops educational programs related to percussion and contemporary music, from the basics of electronic production to masterclasses. He has taught at universities in Miami, Toronto, Hannover, Valencia, Jaén, Santiago de Chile, Gdansk, Lyon, Nagoya and others, and organizes his own summer marimba seminar in Tribunj. Through his work, he continuously promotes Croatian music, explores new forms of artistic expression and inspires young generations of musicians.
